Tipping by Scenario

Scenarios differ — the right amount for food delivery isn't the same as a salon or a hotel. Scenario pages come pre-loaded with the right default tip percentage and local norms.

How this tip calculator works

Type in your bill total before tax, or after — whichever you'd rather tip on. Pick one of the preset percentages, or type your own into the custom box. If you're out with a group, tap the plus button to split the total evenly; the calculator shows both the full bill per person and just the tip per person, so it's easy to see who owes what.

The round-up switch bumps the final total to the next whole unit and folds the difference into the tip — handy for a round number to hand over in cash, or a cleaner Venmo request.

Tips for different occasions

Tipping isn't one-size-fits-all. The right amount depends on the type of service, where you are, and how the experience went. Here's a quick guide for common situations beyond the standard restaurant meal:

Date night. A sit-down dinner for two is the classic tipping scenario. Aim for 18–20% on the pre-tax total. If the server was exceptional — attentive without being intrusive, good recommendations — 20–25% is a generous way to show appreciation.

Business lunch. When you're expensing the meal, the same 18–20% rule applies. Some companies have a per-meal cap, so check your policy. If the bill is large, a flat 15% is still considered acceptable in most corporate settings.

Group dinner. Splitting a bill six ways? Use the calculator's split feature to see exactly what each person owes, including their share of the tip. This avoids the awkward "who's paying for the drinks?" conversation at the end of the night.

Food delivery. Delivery drivers rely heavily on tips, especially in bad weather or for long distances. 15–20% with a $5 minimum is standard. If the order is small, consider tipping a flat $3–5 rather than a percentage, since the driver still made a dedicated trip.

Rideshare. Uber and Lyft drivers appreciate a 10–15% tip, particularly for longer trips, help with luggage, or a clean, comfortable ride. You can tip through the app after the ride, but cash is always welcome.

Hotel stay. Housekeeping staff typically receive $2–5 per night, left daily rather than as a lump sum at checkout so the person who actually cleaned your room gets the tip. Bellhops get $1–2 per bag, and concierge tips vary based on the complexity of the request.

Salon or barber. 15–20% is standard for haircuts, coloring, and other salon services. If multiple people worked on your hair (stylist plus colorist), tip each one separately based on their portion of the service.

Typical tipping in the US

Tipping culture in the United States runs higher than almost anywhere else, largely because service workers' base wages are often built around tip income. These are common starting points — local norms and quality of service still apply.

Ordering in California? Sales tax varies by city — try the California tip calculator, or browse all 50 states for one pre-loaded with your local average rate. Counter service and food trucks are the exception to most of this — tipping there is a nice-to-have, not an expectation, unlike a sit-down restaurant with table service.

Frequently asked questions

Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax total?

Either is considered acceptable. Tipping on the pre-tax subtotal is technically "correct" and slightly cheaper; tipping on the post-tax total is simpler and rounds up faster to a whole number. Use the "Tip on amount after tax" switch above to try either method.

Is it rude to leave less than 15%?

For clearly poor service it's not considered rude, but many servers rely on tips for a meaningful share of their income, so most guides suggest not going below 15% except for genuinely bad experiences.

How do I split a tip unevenly?

This calculator splits evenly by headcount. For uneven splits — say, one person ordered drinks and another didn't — calculate each person's share of the bill separately, then tip that share at your chosen percentage.

Does the calculator store my numbers?

No. Everything runs in your browser and nothing is saved or sent anywhere.

What's the standard tip for a $50 bill?

At 18%, the tip on a $50 bill is $9.00, making the total $59.00. At 20%, it's $10.00 tip and $60.00 total. Use the preset buttons to toggle between common percentages instantly.

Should I tip for takeout or pickup orders?

Tipping on takeout is optional but appreciated. A small tip of 5–10% or a flat $1–3 acknowledges the staff who prepared and packaged your order, especially if it was large or complex.

How do I calculate tip for a large group?

Many restaurants automatically add a gratuity (usually 18–20%) for parties of 6 or more. Check your bill first — if it's already included, you don't need to add more unless the service was exceptional. If no gratuity is added, use this calculator to split the total evenly.

Is tipping different in other countries?

Yes, significantly. In the US, 18–20% is standard for restaurants. In Europe, tipping is more modest (5–10% or rounding up). In Japan, tipping can be considered rude. Always check local customs when traveling — this calculator has country-specific guides for Germany, Spain, Mexico, Italy, and India.
