How much to tip a rideshare driver

15-20% of the fare is the most common range, similar to a restaurant tip, and can be added in the app within a short window after the ride ends — no need to have cash on hand.

A longer or more difficult trip — heavy traffic, multiple stops, help with luggage, a long highway drive — is a reasonable reason to tip toward the higher end or add a bit extra as a flat amount.

The fare you see before the ride already reflects surge pricing and any promotions; the tip is calculated on that fare amount, not on some other base price.

Frequently asked questions

Does tipping affect my driver rating or future fares?

No — the tip is a separate, optional amount added after the ride and has no bearing on pricing algorithms or your passenger rating.

Can I tip in cash instead of through the app?

Yes, most drivers are fine with either — the app is simply more convenient since it doesn't require carrying cash.

Is there a deadline to add a tip after the ride?

Most apps allow tipping for a period after the ride ends (commonly up to a couple of weeks), but it's best to do it right away before you forget.

Do airport rides warrant a bigger tip?

Yes — airport trips are a special case and usually justify a larger tip than a standard city ride, especially at major hubs like JFK, LAX, ORD, DFW, SFO, or HIA. Drivers often have to navigate dedicated pickup lanes and queue for long stretches before reaching you, and if they help haul your checked bags, a suitcase or carry-on, add $1–$2 extra per bag on top of the 15–20% base tip. Curbside drop-offs with luggage are similar: a flat $5–$10 on top of the fare is common if the driver helps unload rather than just pulls to the curb.

Uber tip compared: short ride vs. long ride vs. airport

Short city ride — A typical $12 fare across town for one or two people without luggage is the most common rideshare scenario. A flat $2–$5 cash tip or 15% on the fare works out to roughly $1.80, so in practice most people round up to $2 or $3 in the app rather than calculating exactly. If the driver helped with a stroller, avoided a mess of construction, or got you there faster than the ETA, $5 is a nice gesture.

Long suburban ride — A $45 ride from downtown out to the suburbs, 30+ minutes of highway driving, or a trip with multiple stops along the way. 15–20% on the fare is the solid range: $6.75 at 15%, $9.00 at 20%. Long rides usually mean the driver can't quickly take another fare in the area they dropped you, so the 20% side is the right call if the conversation was good, the ride was smooth, or they made an extra stop without complaining.

Airport ride — Airport transfers through major hubs (JFK, LAX, ORD, DFW, SFO, HIA) come with their own etiquette. The base fare is often higher already due to airport surcharges and flat-rate zones, but the tip still works off that fare: 15–20% on the total fare, then add $1–$2 per checked bag the driver carried, loaded, or unloaded for you. A family with three suitcases going to LAX should add $3–$6 extra in luggage tip beyond the percentage on the fare itself. If the driver arrived 10+ minutes early for a 5am departure or waited patiently while you gathered a group, lean toward 20% plus the bag bonus.
